Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

As a school, different aspects of the global issues have impacted us both positively and negatively. Our project is to continually deliver quality education to the children and satisfactory service to all stakeholders, Here are some of the impacts.
Technology: With the rapid changes in the use of technological tools in the education space, the school is kept on her toes to up her games so that teaching and learning keep up with global standards. For example, we deployed the use of a school software management system that uses A1 .It cuts across communication within and with parents, administering of CBT quizzes, lesson plans and presentation, e,t.c.
Social and Political Changes
The instability in the economy of Nigeria has led to massive brain drain and that alone keeps dropping the school population each term. Parent are relocating abroad with their families for a better life.
The impact of Russia-Ukraine war affected the cost of fuel which badly impacted our running expense on generated. This propelled us to embrace the use of gas to power the generating set at a reduced cost.
Adaptability has kept us thriving in the face of global uncertainties.
How global issues such as Technology, Competition, Social and political changes and environmental crisis impacts my line of work.
Technology- my line of work being tech related, one has to be kept abreast with the latest software updates, trends, modifications to aid proper and effective maintenance and repair of high grade mobile gadgets, because with newer modifications of software applications comes even more complex software issues associated with such mobile devices and gadgets.
Competition: with the ever changing dynamics in the mode of operations in all fields of life, both individual and corporate organisations are all trying to up their game so as not to be pushed aside. The competition is at its highest and no room for falling behind. Healthy competition of course begets innovation and outside-of-the-box ingenuity which is always welcome in any field of practice.
Social and Political Changes: in a world where the government of the day is often times the “be all and say all”. Work and business environments are often shaped by government policies and agendas which could either have a positive or negative impact on the nature of projects to be undertaken, the parameters and overall considerations of factors involved in the project to be undertaken. Political instability and unfriendly government policies have to a large extent affected mode of operations, customer patronage(reduction in purchasing power due to harsh economic realities) and overall business activities.
These global issues have further strengthened the need to be more informed, equipped and better prepared in line of work so as to always be a step ahead and have a competitive edge.
As automation technician, the development in technology has Indeed done a major help in reducing the complexities of components, enhanced organisation outputs with good time efficiency and less damage.
Aslo the raises of Competition has make strategies and strategic planning active in some organisation and facilitate continuous improvement.
Project managers need to be flexible, that is adapting to change cause as the days goes by the world keeps evolving and need ideas and technologies are birth.
There is great effects of Technology on projects along-side global issues. Automation and digital advances are shifting the normal way of handling projects away to more sophisticated analytical, technical, and managerial skills. However, proper training and more collaborative skills have to be introduce to equip workers with skills that complement the new technologies.
Political, legal, institutional, cultural, sociological technological resource, economic, financial, and physical infrastructure are environmental factors that critically affects projects.
Below are skills and critical stakeholders to consider to have a successful projects even with this Big global issues
project manager’s competence, top management support, project manager’s coordinating and leadership skills, monitoring and feedback by the participants, decision-making, coordination among project participants, owners’ competence, social condition, economic condition among others
Project managers need to possess a wide variety of skills, one of such is to be adaptable or flexible to changes (technology, social and political changes, competition etc). The role of project management has become very critical.
There is no way the global issues such as technology, competition, social and political change, environmental crisis will not affect but project manager needs to find a way to adapt and makr sure it does not affect the outcome of the project
I have seen firsthand the effects that the changing world has on the way a company or project is managed. External factors such as the present social and technological climate greatly affect the way a project is run, because failure to keep up with these changes could lead to the wrong parameters of success being used to judge the project. And when this happens, the desired and projected results are not achieved.
Thinking about these global issues such as technology, competition, social and political change, environmental crisis, well i will say these are external forces that can affect the mind because as a project manager we don’t have control over them, and at still yet these global issues can be of great opportunities or threats to an organization
Thinking about global issues such as technology, competition, political change and environmental crisis, All this are external forces which a project manager don’t have control over.
To have a successful project a project manager must be able to posses a skills to managed and adapt to those forces.
Thinking about global issues such as technology, competition, political change and environmental crisis influence the mind at times when it comes to managing of projects, because most of these issues don’t arise when laying down the prerequisite of a project. At the moment, the major global issue affecting my companys project has to do with competition and environmental crisis, with the season we are currently in, it’s difficult to work when you keep making changes to timeline because the weather might cloud at any given time. This is also dependent on political changes as well, with change in government come a change in plans, change in timeline, and also the almighty change in scale of preference . One government might want one project and the other will want a different one, .
As a small business manager, I understand that these global issues have a direct impact on my organization and projects:
1. **Technology**: Embracing new technologies can enhance project efficiency, communication, and customer engagement. It’s essential to stay updated with tech trends that could benefit your projects and improve your operations.
2. **Competition**: Increased competition, especially on a global scale, can affect pricing, market share, and the need for innovation. Adapting your project strategies and keeping an eye on competitors is crucial.
3. **Social and Political Change**: Social and political upheavals can influence consumer behavior and regulatory requirements. Being aware of these changes helps in project planning, risk assessment, and compliance.
4. **Environmental Crisis**: Sustainability considerations can impact project design, materials, and practices. Addressing environmental concerns in your projects can align with changing societal values and regulations.
Incorporating these considerations into project management is crucial for success, as they can influence project priorities, resource allocation, and stakeholder expectations. Being flexible and responsive to the evolving global landscape is key in managing projects in a complex world.
