Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

As a Building services Engineering practitioner, Technological advancement is a major game changer in our practice. For example, with advent of BMS (Building Management system), Smart Homes technologies etc. designs and installation of building services has greatly been impacted, therefore, organization in this practice that wants to remain technically and professionally relevant must focus on keeping abreast of this technological shift.
Environmental emergency like global warming as a result of ozone depletion has affected the code of practice ( i.e globally acceptable best practice) in our industry, a building services engineer must now bear these environmental factors in mind before taking engineering decisions/judgements in his designs/installation.
As a facility manager, changes in the technology have help us in acquiring equipments that have wirk seamless and makes life easy. We have been able secure our environment by using modern cctv cameras which has impacted positively on the lives and property at the estate. There is improvement in the standard of living.
Priced changes of building materials have also affected the cost of developmental projects.
Globalization and it’s complexities have affected our estate management.
As a real estate surveyor, technology has really made things easier and available in our organization, things that ordinarily take king to access are at our finger tips,Marketing, advertising, sales, negotiation and many things have been made easy and life better,so in order to keep enjoying these privileges,we have to keep updating ourselves with the latest technology.
Competition has increased since the advent of technology,if you’re not technologically sound, your competitors will take the clients who are always looking for who to deliver their job efficiently and in good time.
Policies made by the government could favour or be against us and it we must find a way of navigating around such policies through improving on ourselves inorder to be relevant in the industry.
Environmental crisis is one aspect that affects organizations, during the pandemic, alot of people lost their jobs because they were not technologically oriented and there was no way you could go to work that time because of the environmental crisis, that event has really revolutionize technology and has made people to go ICT or lose out on many opportunities,we are not there yet,but we are striving to get there.
As a school in the 21st century, we constantly have to be abreast of global changes, particularly in the field of technology, because growth in technology also impacts the trajectory of different industries including the education industry.
In 2020, Coronavirus rocked the world and forever changed the way we do business and interact with society. As a school, this instilled in us the awareness that we were raising children for the future, a future that will be driven largely by technology, different from what we were raised in. We knew it was either we adapted or were left behind. A massive reorientation took place, with us embracing technology in all our activities. Today, we have digital classrooms to support students’ learning. And meetings that used to be in-person are now held virtually. Planning of school events is done in online groups, reducing the need for physical meetings.
A change in technology, or global socio-political scene, even a change in national government often has a major impact in the way organisations run and ultimately carry out projects.
As someone working in a tech related company, technology has made almost everything easy and transparent. With our technology based products hospitals and medical professionals can attend to patients online, patients are also able to access effective healthcare from the comfort of their home.
Competitors help us evolve, work hard and stay up to date with trends.
Political changes- the useful of technology has also made some governments embrace it.
Talking about my career in building services engineering, technological advancement has brought about the use of different of softwares for our designs. Unlike before when most architects and engineers were heavily dependent on the use of the Autocad software for their designs. However, several other softwares are vastly in use now and if any organisation in the building services industry is aspiring to still remain relevant in business, then it must ensure it equips his workforce with the right skills to be able take on jobs without hesitation.
Competition in the market is getting more fierce like never before. This is to say that myriads of organisations now jostle for fewer projects and as such creating a situation which is being tactically exploited by clients to get projects done for cheaper fees.
Changes in the political terrain also brings about uncertainties which in turn have negative impacts on the economy. All these add up to affect the budget cost of a project.
Global issues such as technological changes, competition, social and political change and environmental crisis impacts my organization and projects. Technological evolution in the telecommunication industry have always put stakeholders on their toes for continuing upskill and innovations sometimes making certain specialization/skills become outdated and unsourced for.
Competition within the industry calls for improved planning/strategizing, product enhancement and constantly budding ideas to keep up with business trends. Political changes and environmental crisis are indeed other factors that keeps every project manager certain difficulty in making project decisions.
Based on my Experience competition has More effect on work.
