Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

Global issues like technology advancements, heightened competition, social and political shifts, and the environmental crisis significantly impact organizations and projects.
Technology: Rapid tech changes demand constant adaptation, requiring projects to integrate new tools and processes, impacting project timelines and resource allocation.
Competition: Intense global competition means organizations must stay agile. Projects need to align with market trends and customer demands to maintain a competitive edge.
Social and Political Change: Evolving regulations and social dynamics can affect project planning and execution, necessitating adaptability and awareness of diverse stakeholder needs.
Environmental Crisis: Sustainability concerns are paramount. Projects must consider reducing environmental footprints, adopting green technologies, and complying with eco-regulations, adding complexity and cost.
In this dynamic landscape, organizations and projects must be flexible, innovative, and socially and environmentally responsible. Adapting to tech advancements, embracing diversity, and addressing sustainability are essential for long-term viability. Meeting these challenges head-on can lead to enhanced resilience and success in an ever-changing world.
Globally, businesses are on a harsh terrain because of the prevailing global issues
1. Political instability across the globe
2. Unstable government policies which most times leave businesses and organizations rise today and fall tomorrow
3.No sustainable economic plan
4. Technology is everything globally. Therefore, all should be made to embrace.
5. Cultural migration across the globe.
6. Toxic environments put businesses at high risk
7 Complex market dynamics
The complexity could be in the form of :
1. Technology shift
2.Global unrest
3. Social economic shift
4. Climate change
5. Government policies
We cannot over emphasize that the globalisation of these complexity plays different roles in various organisations
Project managers need to be fiscally sustainable. I believe that in my line of job the six skills attributes are essential on my day to day routine, among which I possess is continual professional development that will enables me in discharging my duties effectively. I enrolled into this course because I believe there is need to broaden my knowledge.
Some of the global issues I can lay down here for me are
1. The issues of political change in government
2. Environmental changes
3. Technological issues
4. Change in the risk of doing business Social unrest
5. High level of competition
How global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, environmental problems, etc. have impacted your organization and the projects I am involved in?
Technology – Technology brought about a new way of doing new and old things, tackling new and old problems. These do not necessarily involve technical equipment but also novel ways of thinking or organizing. New machines in my facility make consultation less stressful for the doctor and almost painless and stressless experience.
Environmental Crisis – increased disruptions to society from extreme weather, with more flooding and storms, more severe droughts and heat waves, rising sea levels, and warming permafrost. Air pollution can even cause a reduction in revenue when there is high staff turnover or patients refuse to present at the facility due to the bad odour around the premises.
Social and Political – These two forces/influence options open to organizations in the sense that demography changes trends in the way people live, work, and think while on the flip side, government policies may make or mar a business.
Competition – Competition in the sector has put a lot of other healthcare facilities on their toes to step up their game in this industry with regards to developing new ideas, purchasing of new equipment, etc, if they are to get a slice of the national cake.
Competition plays a major role in my entity as it relates to project decisions. Knowing that we have competitors impact greatly our decisions in how we bid and how we offer our services to our clients. Keeping in mind that there are a lot of other entities who can do what we do. This constantly make us want to do better.
As for political and social, technological, and environmental changes, we work with the dynamics it brings to the project per project. This is because with different places comes different climate. And one thing all those global issues have in common with the exception of Competition is that they tend to change with time. So depending on who is requiring our service and where, we structure ourselves to fit the demand while maintaining our values. This can be really hard in certain political climate.
The world is evolving and as an engineer i have noticed so much effect on organizations and projects today, which are;
1. New technology: Tech is already the present and the future. The oil and gas / energy sector are beginning to implement the use of Artificial intelligence in the industry , to be able to meet up with the demands of consumers and this has led to loss of jobs because robots are able to maximize oil production with no risks.
2. Worldwide trade and competition: this is a major issue to all organizations due to inflation rate and currency exchange right now.
3. Social and political disturbances: often times organizations are being locked or projects are being stopped due to demands from community host.
4. Environmental emergency: this can come as flood, storm , risk to human life, which can disrupt the efficiency of workers, revenue etc
Well, we are in a generation where these changes are ever increasing…
It all ball down to how every company understands and responds to these complexities and how they in turn use it to influence the projects they chooses to undertake to achieving their intending goal.
Thanks
The competitive and unpredictable nature of the world has created a complex trend and possibility for projects.
Complexity could be in the form of:
1. Technological shift and advancement
2. Climate change
3. Socio-economic shift
4. Government policies
5. Global unrest
The Aerospace Mentorship organization is likely impacted by these global issues in various ways:
1. Technology: Advancements in aerospace technology significantly influence mentorship programs. Keeping up with cutting-edge developments is crucial to impart relevant knowledge and skills to mentees. Integration of emerging tech like AI, advanced materials, or propulsion systems impacts mentorship content and guidance.
2. Competition: The competitive landscape affects mentorship initiatives. Understanding market dynamics, emerging players, and innovative strategies becomes vital to prepare mentees for a competitive industry.
3. Social and Political Change: Changes in policies, geopolitical shifts, or societal expectations influence aerospace operations and practices. Mentorship programs might need to address evolving ethical standards, diversity and inclusion initiatives, or global socio-political impacts on the industry.
4. Environmental Crisis: The aerospace industry faces increasing pressure to develop sustainable practices. Mentorship programs could focus on eco-friendly technologies, green initiatives, and sustainability, preparing future professionals to tackle environmental challenges.
In projects, these global issues could manifest through the need for mentors to adapt teaching methodologies, address ethical implications of technology, prepare mentees for global market shifts, integrate sustainable practices, and foster an understanding of the aerospace industry’s role in societal and environmental contexts. Incorporating these aspects into mentorship programs ensures the next generation of aerospace professionals is well-equipped to navigate these pressing global challenges.
