Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

The invent of technology worldwide, and the adoption of technology into the construction industry have helped shape and improve the industry within my country, this have also affected the way a project manager is to plan and execute a project.
This module’s theme about managing projects in a complex world resonates deeply. The global backdrop you paint – tech revolutions, interconnected markets, socio-political churn, and environmental anxieties – perfectly captures the dynamic landscape within which organizations, and hence projects, operate.
It’s easy to think project management exists in its own bubble, but acknowledging the interconnectedness is crucial. How an organization interprets and adapts to this complexity will shape the projects it prioritizes and how it steers them.
I’m particularly intrigued by the exploration of frameworks that guide us through this intricate world. Frameworks can be invaluable tools for understanding what’s happening around us, informing our actions and decisions, ultimately empowering us to navigate uncertainty with greater clarity.
Complexity is fascinating, isn’t it??it’s this intricate web that weaves itself into every aspect of our world, from the simplest system to the most convoluted structure, what specifically are you pondering about complexity?? Is It about the complexity in nature, technology, system,or something else entirely
Globalisation has affected different sectors including healthcare systems. In my organization, the economic issue currently faced by my country has increased the migration of several pharmaceutical companies, which has therefore affected the procurement department. The cost of procurement for drugs is constantly increasing and this has affected both the masses and health professionals as there is limited access to funds.
Because there are so many infringements on intellectual property rights, the increased use of technology has led to a larger use of my area of expertise, law.
But as a company, we have an obligation to stay current with technological advancements.
Healthy competition enables us to reflect on and assess our actions, errors, and accomplishments.
As a society and community evolve, new regulations are implemented, which might occasionally increase or decrease the organization’s prospects.
Current awareness of the state of the environment is necessary because environmental changes are contingent upon what the environment requires at any one time.
In a fast changing world, with the use of technology in workplaces, organizations have been able to increase their productivity and efficiency at a rapid pace. Processes that were once manual and time-consuming can now be achieved in a quick and efficient manner with digital tools, applications, and systems.
Basically, the complexity here is simply having basic understanding for how these systems work, making adjustments, and practically doing what needs to be done in order to be afloat, these ensures a successful completion of projects.
In the Event world for instance, the role of technology in event planning and management has grown exponentially in recent years. From the early days of paper invitations and manual attendee tracking, event planning has now entered the digital age. Technology has made event planning and management easier, more efficient, and more cost-effective, such as the rise of Event planning software, Online registration and Ticketing, Event Apps, Social Media and even Live streaming.
Global issues affect every organization in different ways just as listed in the write up to this which include; Technology, competition, social and political change, and the environmental crisis.
The rise in technology has made it possible for so many organization or business to thrive during crisis time, and even make more money if they are willing to pay the price of an investor. I work in the healthcare industry and due to the emergent of Covid-19 there has been competition between different hospitals, Government own established hospital and private hospitals bidding to get Nurses to work in their facility as a result of shortage of nurses. These healthcare staffing companies are willing to double the amount permanent staff are making just to get their services to other hospitals or establishment who are willing to pay more for their services. At the long it’s very important to know that each of the above changes has power one way or the other to effect change management. Social and political change is another issues. With a change in government comes the change in policies and rules on how business or deals are managed in accordance with the laws pertaining to the government in power. Every organization must understand this will come and work towards adaptation to every single change in other to advance their businesses.
Trying to manage projects in a complicated world. The complexity here involves the understanding of the rise in new technology, competition, social and political changes and environmental issues.
When you fail to realize that at some point in a project you will be face with one or some of these impacts, your organization hardly strives, or your projects gets complete successfully.
In my industry, the hospitality industry we face a lot of competition day in day out. There is a constant rise in the number of hotels with new technologies and upgraded hotel versions like the Airbnb. These industry at some point in certain locations are affected by the socio-political situations.
As such what is needed is to always be ahead of the competition by constantly conducting research in the market, learn and know about the latest technology, and the socio-political developments of that location and around the world
Trying to evaluate and understand the technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental issues in a wider perspective is critical to run projects in a changing world. The above mentioned elements can have adverse impacts on various projects if good attention is not drawn. As someone working in tourism industry, its operation is changing because of upgraded changes in technology which impact a lot on competition. Nowadays the online presence is making it to get customers from around the world who want ti visit specific touristic destinations. The smart digital marketing is outcompeting the old one. This means there is a need of adapting with new changes or improvement in technologies in order to win the competition because these new technological trends make life easy on side of clients as well as on side of the business owner. What is needed is to make huge investments in digital marketing in order to bring to online table the services tourista are looking for. Many people who were used to old marketing strategies are finding it difficult to get customers, hence there is an urgent call for everyone to adapt per this changing world in order to keep their businesses successful.
The rise of AI affected my organization, as it threatened to take away some of our clients.
