Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.
You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.
This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.
Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.
By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.
To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.
Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

Considering the major global issues and how they affect organisations. Technologies advancements have become a driving force behind organizational transformation. Technologies can enable organisational to streamline operations, improve efficiency and reach a broader customer base.
As an I.T officer, embracing new technologies can lead to competitive advantages and innovation.
Organisations may explore new ways to operate more efficiently and provide value during challenging times.
In response to the declining number of calls despite the evident psychological impact of the economic situation, our helpline project conducted research by administering questionnaires to diverse audiences. The findings revealed a noteworthy barrier: although there was an increase in mental stress and a heightened need for therapy, the perceived expense of making phone calls to our center hindered accessibility for many.
In light of this, we decided to address the financial barrier by introducing an alternative and more cost-effective mode of communication. We’ve now incorporated a WhatsApp chat number alongside our traditional call center line. This addition aims to provide people with a more affordable means of reaching out to us, acknowledging the financial constraints that some individuals may be facing.
By offering a WhatsApp chat option, we anticipate that more individuals will find it easier to connect with our helpline service, fostering a more accessible and inclusive platform for mental health support. This adjustment aligns with our commitment to breaking down barriers and ensuring that our services remain readily available to those in need, particularly during challenging economic circumstances.
Managing project costs in Nigeria these days is so unpredictable with the constant dollar increase and/or decrease.

Awareness of changes such as social & political change, environmental crisis is essential for aligning our projects with trending &evolving needs that concerns our immediate student community. Eco-Friendly project practise makes these activities align with the global environment goal. However there should be a balance in the Agile and Traditional management approaches for effective implementation as the world revolves.
The political and climatic context generally has unpredictable impacts on my organization’s projects. This is particularly evident in the case of the war in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which disrupts road traffic and compels the populations in our project area to leave their respective living environments. This complex situation demands constant adaptation and mobilization to find sustainable solutions in the face of challenges posed by these political and climatic factors.
Global issues such as technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental issues have a significant impact on organizations and the projects they undertake.
Technology: While technology offers opportunities for efficiency gains in all areas. organizations have to continuously adapt to rapid changes.
Competition: In as much as competition leads to innovation. organizations are faced with the pressure to adapt to changing market trends to stay competitive.
Social and Political Changes: Understanding socio-political landscapes is crucial for effective stakeholder engagement and communication.
Environmental issues: Organizations have to increasingly integrate sustainability into their operations in order to mitigate environmental impacts.
The use of technology has helped project efficiency in reducing repetitive work to help my team work faster and more efficiently on delegated tasks. Projects are now mostly automated, follow up reports are easily seen through technology and it has enabled me to accomplish many tasks quickly and efficiently.
As a student union leader, I need to consider how major global issues impact our organization and the projects we undertake. Here’s how these issues affect us:
1. Technology: The rapid advancement of technology significantly impacts how we engage with students, manage events, and communicate. Embracing digital tools and platforms is crucial to enhance our outreach, improve member engagement, and streamline administrative processes.
2. Competition: Increased competition among student organizations means we must be more innovative and strategic in project planning. We need to differentiate our initiatives to attract and retain student members.
3. Social and Political Change: Shifts in social and political dynamics can influence student interests and priorities. Staying aware of these changes is essential for aligning our projects with the evolving needs and concerns of our student community.
4. Environmental Crisis: Environmental concerns, like sustainability and climate change, are becoming increasingly important for student organizations. Incorporating eco-friendly practices and projects into our activities aligns with global environmental goals and resonates with environmentally conscious students.
In light of these factors, I must stay informed, adapt to change, and use project management approaches responsive to uncertainty and shifting dynamics in the educational and social environment. We may need to balance traditional project management methods with agile approaches to remain adaptable and effective in a complex and ever-changing world.
Global issues can have an impact on a project or an organization. Using Nigeria as a case study, the legal tender in the company is really affecting the value of the currency, to carryout any project now too much money will be spent just to get a project done because it has lose it value
Global issues can have a strong impact in an organisation’s project and decision, in a case of currency devaluation which is influenced by political changes, this can affect the budget and timelines of project negatively.
In cases of competition which is cause by oversaturated market, this can affect the project Negatively hence the need to create a more improved version of whatever project an organisation is handling to differentiate and give them an edge over other competitors.
