~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. Change is something that is constant, so every organization should expect change. If there is change or any advancement in technology and global economy, organizations should not be rigid not to adapt to this changes to meet demand and standards.

  2. Rapid advancements in technology has influenced the capabilities and direction of organization’s research and development efforts. Staying at the forefront of technological innovation is crucial for maintaining competitiveness and relevance in the field. Societal attitudes and political change or landscape shape the regulatory environment in which we operate. Environmental crisis as well as climate change has a way of influencing our decision making processes related to resource allocation, energy consumption, and operational practices within the organization.
Considering these factors, the organization must continually assess and adapt its strategies, projects, and operations to navigate the evolving landscape of technology, competition, social and political dynamics, and environmental challenges.
This may involve prioritizing research areas with high societal impact, and fostering collaborations to address complex global issues.

  3. This world effect actually affect managing projects. In the case where there is change of government in a country politically this could affect the cost of a project leading to either shooting out of budget or below. For example if the country economy is affected it has effect on the project.
Secondly, climate change could affect the time frame of a particular project which is natural and uncontrollable.
Thirdly, competitors can actually make either the sponsors of projects to demand speed regardless of meeting standard or group of the managers alter standard to meet up time challenge.

    1. True, Competition can also pose a huge demand on the PM because stake holders, management and sponsors will demand projects to be delivered to stay ahead of the competitors with or without increase in funding. This dilemma may tose the PM into compromise standards In order to meet the demands for increase quantity and supply while undermining quality.
But I think this is where ethical standards and code of conducts comes into play to keep the PM in check.

Secondly unstable government policies and political instabilities deeply interfere with projects and the PM’s performance. Just as we can observe the current inflation rates facing the nations with hikes of prices cut across almost all sectors organizations may want a PM to deliver projects regardless with limited findings or sticking to initial budgets. Well this is also where continuous communication with stake holders and good negotiation skills come into Play. And I I also want to say that pose the need for Contingency plans on the part of the PM.

  4. Social and political change, has had a tremendous effect. Environmental change is also one of the many factors contributing to some organizational failures. Technology has been rather helpful to assist in making the everyday life easier and more productive.
