~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. I work in an OOH and DOOH Company. Below are the ways Global issues affect my Organization and our ongoing projects:
    1. Technology: New tech like digital screens and data analytics can improve our ads and reach more people. But we must keep up with these changes or risk falling behind.
    2. Competition: More companies are entering the market, so we need to stand out with unique ideas and excellent service to keep our customers.
    3. Social and Political Change: Changes in laws or public opinions can affect how we advertise and what content we can show. We must stay updated and adaptable.
    4. Environmental Crisis: People care more about eco-friendly practices now. Using sustainable materials and reducing waste can improve our reputation and attract eco-conscious clients.

  2. As a pharmacist in the healthcare sector, global issues significantly impact my organization and projects.

Technological advancements can improve patient care and medication management, but also require investment in training and infrastructure.

Competition from online pharmacies and changing patient expectations demand innovative services and personalized care. Social and political changes, such as healthcare policy reforms, affect funding and access to care.

The environmental crisis raises concerns about sustainable practices and supply chain management in reference to transportation.

To address these challenges, the healthcare sector need to prioritize digital transformation, patient-centric care, and sustainable practices, while staying informed about policy changes and industry trends.

  3. As a civil engineer, the impacts of technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental issues are integral to how we plan, execute, and manage our projects.

Technology has significantly transformed the way we operate. For instance, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in our projects has improved our planning accuracy and efficiency. These tools help us in simulating various scenarios and optimizing our designs. Additionally, technology like drones and IoT devices aids in monitoring construction sites in real-time, ensuring safety and compliance with established guidelines.

Competition in the industry has become fiercer with globalization. It drives innovation but also puts pressure on pricing and the quality of services. We strive to differentiate ourselves through specialized expertise in sustainable engineering and by adopting advanced technologies that not only streamline construction processes but also enhance the lifespan and efficiency of the structures we build.

Social and political changes also have profound implications. For example, increasing urbanization requires us to design infrastructure that can accommodate growing populations. Changes in regulations and policies, like stricter environmental laws or mandates for green buildings, require us to constantly adapt our practices and designs. Moreover, projects often face scrutiny from various stakeholders including local communities, which necessitates transparent communication and community engagement strategies.

Environmental challenges are perhaps the most pressing. As civil engineers, we have a pivotal role in addressing issues such as climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental degradation. We focus on sustainable construction practices that minimize environmental impact, such as using recycled materials, ensuring efficient water and energy use, and designing for longevity and adaptability. Mitigating the impacts of natural disasters and building resilient infrastructure is also a growing priority, which involves considering future climate conditions rather than relying solely on historical data.

In conclusion, these global issues do not only challenge us but also create opportunities to innovate and improve the resilience and sustainability of our built environment. Our response to these challenges directly impacts the success of our projects and the sustainability of our communities.

  4. As a Customer Service Representative and Virtual Assistant, Technology has been so beneficial to us in terms of making our job easier and delivering exceptional services.
New software and tools are created every day, aiming to streamline our work processes. However, staying sought after and excelling in your job requires staying up to date with the latest innovations and continuously upskilling.

  5. As a realtor in Nigeria, the real estate system has been affected greatly by our current political system. And this has in turn affected the system in terms of high cost of purchasing building materials and paying for labour, hence causing the increase of landed properties and building project. This is because of how unstable our currency is and the unfavorable monetary decisions given by the apex

  6. Having been in the educational system for a long time, the growing awareness of environmental issues has led to the inclusion of environmental education in the school curriculum. Schools now teach about sustainability, climate change, and ecological conservation, preparing students for environmental stewardship.

Again, laying emphasis on soft skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and adaptability aligns education with the needs of a rapidly changing job market thus preparing students for success in diverse career pathways.

  7. As a virtual assistant, I’ve observed firsthand how major global issues such as technology advancements, increased competition, social and political changes, and environmental concerns impact not only my organization but also the projects I’m involved in.

Technology plays a significant role in shaping the way we work and interact with clients and team members. The rapid pace of technological advancements requires constant adaptation and upskilling to remain competitive and deliver high-quality services efficiently.

Competition, especially in the virtual assistant industry, drives us to continuously innovate and differentiate ourselves to attract and retain clients. It also pushes us to stay updated with industry trends and best practices to stay ahead of the competition.

Social and political changes can influence the regulatory landscape, market dynamics, and client preferences. As virtual assistants, we need to navigate these changes carefully to ensure compliance and adapt our strategies to meet evolving client needs and expectations.

Environmental problems, such as climate change and sustainability concerns, are increasingly becoming key considerations in project planning and execution. Clients and organizations are placing greater emphasis on environmentally friendly practices, which may impact the way projects are designed, implemented, and evaluated.

Overall, these global issues require virtual assistants like myself to remain agile, adaptable, and proactive in addressing challenges and leveraging opportunities that arise in this dynamic and interconnected world.
