~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. Advancement in technology and other global issues had really impacted the way we do things, basically almost everything we do at my place of work been fintech related had been moved to the online space, although it has it advantages like having a larger customer base, the ease in record keeping, it still has it own disadvantages, although the social and political changes has affected the organization because of the rules and changes been put in place, but this has also helped us to think of a more better way to handle projects in line with the current happening

  2. Global issues like technology, competition, social and political change and the environmental crisis impact my work.
Technology pushes me to stay current with tools that boost efficiency. Competition raises client expectations so I continuously require my skills to stand out. Social and political changes require sensitivity, aligning with clients evolving priorities, such as inclusivity. The environmental crisis also influences my approach, encouraging sustainable practices, even in virtual work. These factors derive me to be adaptable, proactive and socially aware to meet clients needs effectively.

  3. Technology advancement is a tunnel that has no end. There will always be a need to upgrade oneself and this fires up competition. The need to always know and be current.

Social and political changes is a major factor that affects any project. It breeds uncertainty and instability. It also takes the extremes. Extremely positive or extremely negative outcomes. This is same with environmental problems.

All nations of the world has the problems and like Bill Woollen says “The show must go on”.

  5. Global issues like technology, competition, social and political change, and environmental challenges are deeply interconnected.

    1. **Technology**: Rapid advancements are reshaping economies and societies, driving innovation but also exacerbating inequality and privacy concerns.

    2. **Competition**: Nations and corporations are competing for technological supremacy, resources, and market dominance, which can lead to geopolitical tensions.

    3. **Social and Political Change**: Social movements and shifts in public opinion are increasingly influencing political landscapes, often demanding more accountability and sustainability.

    4. **Environmental Issues**: Climate change and resource depletion require urgent action. Technology can provide solutions, but political will and social buy-in are crucial for effective implementation.

Addressing these challenges requires collaboration across borders and sectors, integrating diverse perspectives and expertise.

  6. Reflecting on these global issues through the lens of project management really shifts my approach and focus in meaningful ways:

    1. Technology: The pace of technological change encourages me to leverage tools that enhance project efficiency. Integrating financial software and HR platforms not only streamlines processes but also improves data accuracy, risk management, and resource allocation. Incorporating digital tools for my seminars on conflict resolution—like virtual collaboration or mediation platforms—can offer a flexible approach, especially for the Nigerian audience. Using these tools helps me manage project timelines more effectively and ensure each phase is tracked and optimized.

    2. Competition: To stay competitive, I recognize the need to define my projects with a unique angle that resonates with my audience. My growth mentorship approach, which balances personal, spiritual, and financial development, sets my work apart. This means that my project management practices must prioritize authenticity and quality, focusing on delivering impactful experiences rather than just meeting industry standards. By sharing personal insights and lessons, especially in talks like “Growth Habits,” I can build a project identity that is both distinctive and deeply relatable.

    3. Social and Political Change: Social shifts influence the way I approach project planning and stakeholder engagement. My personal journey with self-compassion and boundary-setting informs the way I lead and manage projects. For instance, integrating these values into team dynamics and client interactions helps foster a supportive and inclusive project environment. Adapting my conflict resolution content to reflect Nigerian cultural contexts allows for a more relevant and effective program, showing that I’m attentive to current social needs. This helps build trust and ensures my projects align with the changing social landscape.

    4. Environmental Crisis: While my projects aren’t directly tied to environmental work, I see an opportunity to adopt sustainable practices within each phase. This could mean using digital documentation to reduce waste or promoting long-term, responsible decision-making in my seminars. By modeling small but impactful changes, I can introduce a sense of environmental responsibility in a way that feels accessible to clients and stakeholders. These practices, though subtle, align with an emerging expectation for more conscious project management.

Technological advancements bring cybersecurity concerns, while competition demands innovation and adaptation. Social and political changes require diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and environmental concerns necessitate sustainable practices. Reflecting on these issues encourages organizational resilience, innovation, and responsible practices, ultimately ensuring long-term success and positive impact. Thank you!

  8. Technology has have the most impact on the organisation I once worked. We transitioned to digital ways of operation in other to keep up with new industry trends. The digital upgrade gave an edge in competition. For political changes, I haven’t noticed much.

  9. Technological changes makes work easier and faster while political changes lead to some changes in organisations policy.

The global issues we are mostly affected by are, inflation, change in government policies and rapid innovative technology. As a result of that we have to be adaptive as the changes occur which affects the organization in many ways.
