What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  1. Quality should not entirely be a customer based decision because sometimes the customer may be ignorant of what they really want.

How do I know? For example, there are several construction projects that have been done haphazardly in Nigeria handled by some construction firms because they compromised on quality management standards and decided to do it as the clients wanted even if it is to the detriment of their reputation.

From my knowledge of few plant construction and maintenance projects, The ability of producing quality should be intrinsic in the processes from start to completion.

Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project to the end of it. E.g For the purpose of quality, in building a Urea Plant, Stainless Steel 316L should never be compromised for stainless 304 let alone carbon steel. If tried, corrosion will invaded the plant in it’s totality, production will be affected and subsequently the plant will eat up the MOC in less than no time.

I agree that Quality should be discussed openly to find corrective action. Managers, Project sponsors and customers should be briefed on the need for quality in all the processes that will lead to the final product and the consequences of cutting corners.

It is not entirely true that team members will not produce quality without close supervision. Communication, sharing the goals and objectives of the project per time to team members can make them act like owners thereby taking full responsibility, ownership and even going the extra to get the job done although supervision is very key.

  2. Good evening for me quality should be from a driven focus which is what molde out blue print of your work once having it in view as a project manager your work is as good as done because you know the standard and worth of what you are to expect at the end of your task. Also when planing, quality should be insisted into your plan or budget so you can have a marketable uphold and ethical standard.

  3. Quality management ensures that an organization, product or service consistently functions well. It has four main components: quality planning, quality assurance, quality control and quality improvement. Quality management is focused not only on product and service quality, but also on the means to achieve it. Quality management, therefore, uses quality assurance and control of processes as well as products to achieve …

I do not agree that Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.

  4. The meaning of quality especially in “research projects” is to solve policy problems and provide interventions by adopting best practices, rigor, and analytics and presenting findings to a global audience. Research that is comprehensive and relevant to the current context should also include collaboration and communication with a variety of stakeholders. In addition to conducting research ethically, researchers should ensure that participants’ rights are protected, and that the research will have a positive impact on the wider community. Research should also be documented and shared widely in order to achieve this. To ensure that this happens, researchers should establish relationships with experts, stakeholders, and relevant partners throughout the research process and gain insight from them.

  6. Quality should be all about meeting the customer’s needs and expectations.

It’s important to think about quality right from the start of the project.

During the project, the execution phase is vital for achieving quality goals.

Openly discussing and addressing quality issues is crucial for improvement.

Hiding quality problems is not helpful; honesty and transparency are better.

People generally want to produce good-quality work and take pride in it.

While some supervision is essential, empowering team members can lead to better quality outputs.

  7. quality, can never be over emphasized.
quality starts from the onset o a project and maintained all through the project period.
quality can only be ascertain from buyer or consumers satisfaction.
a practical example is in my present career practice (poultry feeds production), farmers satisfaction is a clear indication of quality observed during production.

  8. I agree with the points that:
    1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.

  9. As for me, Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs. I support this motion because the essence any assigned project is to meet customers’ specifications and satisfactions. Any thing other than this make the output of the project substandard.

  10. I totally agree that quality should not be watered down at all levels i mean from beginning of a project till the end of it. Is not enough to end a project timely with low quality standard.

    1. Quality should should be considered as the beginning of the project, because it helps to give team members a sense of direction and purpose and also make them to understand the nature or the kind of good that is to be produced for the customers service.
