What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
  2. Quality is an internal focus.
  3. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
  4. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
  5. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
  6. Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
  7. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
  8. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

Buyers may not really know much about what they want to buy in terms of quality. As far as some buyers are concerned, “they see a product, they like it and they want to buy it”.

A manufacturer or an industrialist and as the case may be a project manager who has a mission and vision statement should come up with core values that will make his products or projects stand out and pass the test of time and, as such quality should be a priority to him as it will drive out his mission, vision and core values to his customers and or consumers who will be his mouth piece to the market.

It is also the job of the project manager however to ensure that the technical knowhow of identifying the quality of his projects or products is revealed to the end users.

100% transparency and honesty in terms of project quality should be given a shut as a large degree of good project or product outcome has been entrusted in his expertise so quality should not be compromised for anything.

Below are some points highlighted in the lesson that I would like to disagree with.

#Quality should not be fully focused on the customer’s needs, not all customers no what they need.
#Not all people are keen on producing quality outputs.
#Quality problems should not be hidden at all from from whoever.

    1. Yes, i agree with you.

But, to stress on the point further, in my own opinion, i think the quality is much more than fit to the purpose only. You will agree with me that the idea of quality is interconnected with a few other items like standard, quality assurance, quality control (ie.QA/QC). In any given project, or service, all these items must be taken into a serious consideration.

However, in other words, quality may be defined as a unified standard of product attributes required at a specific time. To achieve this, there is a need for proper QA/QC, as well as standard, because chances are that the customer may not know the level or degree of quality he require.

Another thing that is essential is transparency during negotiation, which is ought to have been well spelt out for an agreed level of quality against a unified standard.

  4. Quality is a very important aspect of products and services. The quality of a product or service should not be compromised no matter the condition of doing business or unforeseen challenges.
As a project manager the product or service being delivered must meet and exceed both customer expectations and even the project managers’

For example, people will be more willing to pay more for best quality even if more time was consumed than pay for a product or service that does not meet standard or expectation.

Regular communication, feedback collection, and stakeholder engagement are essential to ensure that the project’s outcomes meet or exceed customer expectations.
