What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Now take a moment to consider the following statements about quality. Which ones do you agree with?

  1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
  2. Quality is an internal focus.
  3. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
  4. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
  5. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
  6. Quality problems should be concealed from customers and possibly managers.
  7. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
  8. Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision.

As a civil engineer who want my project work to stand the test of time and it being useful throughout its design life quality must be considered.

So quality plan and discussion should be talked about before the project starts i mean during the conception phase.

Quality of the products to be used has to be specified with it meeting the required standards. Imagine using a 20inch rod when 25inch iron bar is needed. This can affect the allowable strength required.

I also want to point out safety, cos the quality of materials used during construction has a lot to determine how safe th structure will be.

    QUALITY IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
Quality is crucial to any project. After a review of the above statements I conclude & agree thus:
1.Quality should prioritize customers’ needs and expectations.
2.Quality should not be an internal focus only but external too(Internal & External).
3.Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
4.The execution phase of the project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
5.Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
6.Quality problems should NOT be concealed at all both from customers and possibly managers.
7.Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.
8.This is not always true. Trust, clear communication, and good skill set can also lead to quality outputs.

    1. Quality is the most important thing to consider is the process of planning any particular project.
Therefore, I strongly agree with the following while I disagree with the others
      1. Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
      2. Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
      3. The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals.
      4. Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
      5. Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.

  6. Quality is suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

The terms I would agree with is
Quality should prioritize the customer’s needs.
    Quality is an internal focus.
Quality should be considered from the project’s inception.
Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions.
Individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes.

  7. The goal of any project is to meet the needs of customers and so I agree with the statement that quality should be focused on the customer’s needs because the customers are the end users of the product or service.

Secondly, quality should be considered from the inception of the project as this would determine the cost of production. The level of investment in production will determine the quality of the product.

Thirdly, quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions. This is where team work comes in. It will provide the opportunity and forum for team members to give their contributions on ways to resolve the issues.

  8. Right from the planning stage of a project, Quality should never be neglected or overlooked and every team member you have it in mind not to trade quality for anything while getting the job done

  9. Quality should be considered right from the planning or inception phase of a project. Quality output gives the project a cutting edge advantage, while also meeting client satisfaction.
Although quality should not only be at the discretion of the customers, project teams needs to learn the importance of quality control, quality assurance and quality service delivery, whether or not it meets client standards.
Quality problems should also be discussed with and addressed by all stakeholders and members of the project team.

    1. Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.
Quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective measures

      1. At the beginning of any project, Quality should be emphasized, it should not be compromised because it says so much about the project manager and the team members. I agree with this;
Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs.
Quality should be considered from the beginning of a project
Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions
The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets

      2. Project quality management is the process of defining quality standards for the deliverables of a project, as well as the quality assurance measures to guarantee those standards are met. However, quality can be an elusive word.

  10. I entirely agree with the following statements amongst others:
Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.
Quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.

some of the other assertions are right depending on context. Some team members won’t prioritise quality if not adequately supervised.
also, some customers don’t know what they want and are only focused on functionality not quality per see. hence, quality should not be limited to clients’ desires but to what is obtainable and expected.
