What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

1)Quality should be focused on the customer’s needs.Agreed.Because from the definition of quality-it is considered as ‘fitness to use’,meaning it has to meet the customers desire/requirements.
2)Quality is focused internally.First, what does it mean for something to be internally focused?Internal focus involves focusing on your own thoughts and emotions.Hence I disagree with the statement because quality should be to the customers requirements and not what you think as a person.
3)Quality should be considered from the beginning of the project.Agreed
4)The execution phase of a project is the most critical to achieve quality targets.I don’t totally agree with this statement because I believe that every phase/stage of a project from start to finish is as critical as any other stage throughout the project lifecycle.
5)Quality issues should be discussed openly to find correlative actions.Strongly agree because transparency, honesty, and ability to embrace change and critics should be the watchword in every project team as this gives room for growth, development and improvement.
6)Quality problems should be hidden from customers and possibly also managers.Disagree.Being transparent to customers, managers, team members and stakeholders helps build trust among teams.

  9. I agree with statements 1- 5 because:
    1. The product is for the consumer and must satisfy what the consumer deems quality in order to be favourably accepted

    4. This is where the plan is put into action to achieve desired result. Without a proper and feasible plan, this stage will fail and a sustainable quality output will not be generated.

I disagree completely with statement 6. Such should never be entertained as this will hinder effective and targeted progress. It will also affect the project handling outfit negatively
