What is quality [PM Course discussion]

Various definitions of the concept of quality have been put forward.

One generic definition (Pass, 2006b) is as follows:

The overall characteristics of a product or service that fulfill the requirements of customers in terms of quality.

This definition aligns with the viewpoint of Joseph Juran, who, in the 1950s, defined quality as ‘fitness for use’ (as quoted in ASQ, 2019).

This definition is largely consistent with the definition of quality provided by APM (2019, p. 214):

The suitability for the intended purpose and the degree to which the output of a process or the process itself conforms to the requirements.

Quality is very essential, any project that lacks quality may produce non-lasting outputs. I think quality should be the core value of all organizations, once I am known for qualities, it becomes my standard, and customers who are willing to have quality output will sure patronize me,even if I am expensive. All team members, having known that the core value of the organization is quality they sure no they won’t go below that while attending to customer’s, because it’s been discussed since the beginning of the organization.

  5. I agree on these points; quality should be focused on the customer’s needs. Once customers are satisfied with what they needed that assures the acceptability (quality) of the service or product.
Also, qality should be considered from the beginning of the project. Both the project manager, team and stakeholders should have a clear picture of what they are going to deliver. Quality should be one of the key points to deliberate on before embarking on any project.
And also quality issues should be discussed openly to find corrective actions.
Team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision. Yes, this is the role of the project manager to work hand in hand with the project team, supervision and monitoring is needed to achieve quality outputs in any given project.

    1) I agree that quality should prioritize the customer’s needs. Quality should be considered before production or the project begins, with pre-production or pre-project steps. Quality will not only help to deliver a seamless customer experience but also improve customer service metrics.

2)I also want to agree that quality is an internal focus because quality improvement programs are implemented within the company for the purpose of maintaining specific quality standards in the process. The organization through individual and collective actions focuses on meeting customer needs, recognizing that customer perception identifies quality.

3)Of course, quality should be considered from the inception of the project, Quality needs to be managed throughout the complete project life cycle. That means quality management must begin right at the start of the project to be really effective. The more thought put into fitness for purpose and acceptance of the solution early in the project, the better the chances of its success

4)Yes, The execution phase of a project is crucial for achieving quality goals. A project execution plan helps team members trust each other and creates a team-oriented culture. This way, each team member can understand what’s expected from them, what tasks they should be working on, and who they need to work with. Encourages problem-solving.

    5) I agree that quality issues should be openly discussed to identify corrective actions. this will help to find the time to focus on the planning, corrective actions, and analysis of the results.

6)Quality problems should not be concealed from customers and possibly managers so as to enhance the organization’s brand and reputation, protect it against risks, increase its efficiency, boost its profits and reduce waste, and position it to keep on growing.

    7) I agree that individuals are enthusiastic about producing high-quality outcomes because results-driven and passionate individuals are about delivering high-quality though there may be some individuals with a different opinion.

    8) I agree to an extent based on experience that team members do not produce quality outputs without close supervision. However, there are some team members who do not need close supervision to deliver quality jobs.

  7. For quality to be achieved, all team members must understand the scope of the project prior to execution as the concept of delivering a quality project should be the team’s target.
