~~ Thinking about complexity – Discussion

Hello, this module focuses on how to manage projects in a complicated world. The world is changing rapidly and in unpredictable ways. Just consider the changes caused by new technology, worldwide trade and competition, social and political disturbances, and the environmental emergency.

You might think that project management has little to do with these major global matters. However, all kinds of organizations, whether large or small, are impacted by the world they operate in. How a company understands and responds to this complexity influences the projects it chooses to undertake and how it handles them.

This week, we begin by examining frameworks that help us grasp this intricate world. These frameworks guide our actions, responses, and decision-making in the face of complexity.

Next, we delve deeply into various methods and practices for managing projects when faced with uncertainty, instability, and change. These methods include linear approaches and life cycles, often known as the waterfall method, as well as iterative or agile approaches. You will explore the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the ongoing debates about them.

By the end, you’ll grasp how to use and blend these methods effectively to achieve successful project outcomes.

To start off this week, we’re interested in hearing about your experiences. Considering those major global issues like technology, competition, social and political changes, and environmental problems, think about how they impact your organization and the projects you’re involved in.

Feel free to share your experiences with fellow learners in the discussion.

  1. As a project manager, the changing world due to globalization and technological advancement as well as environmental change has greatly affected the way projects are being run and delivered. Apart from striving for professionalism, being and staying relevant is an integral part of the project works in meeting the needs and yearnings of the general public that we serve either directly or indirectly. Why is this? Technology has changed the way things are done, the advent of mobile phones, mobile interface that allows people to have access to basic information and services and not necessarily having to go physically is changing the attitude and response of officers to ensure proper service delivery. This one needs to also contend with those still stuck with the old ways of doing things which are no longer effective. Globalization has brought about global views and interaction because its no longer limited to those within your political, or sociocultural regions but the whole world as a global village. The environmental changes has put more awareness into the perspective of sustaining the integrity of the environment vis a vis the functionality of those within the same environment. Also the climate change , its effect and responses to those effects are now crucial to allow for adequate preparation in the case of adverse cases.
The complexity to which all these factors are now interwoven has also put a lot of demand on one hand while making others redundant on the other hand.

  2. There are many complex issues that affect my practice. Consider technology transfer and its impact on project delivery, inflation as it affect prices of construction materials necessitating constant review of contract cost or need to re-negotiate the terms of a contract and finally global climate change and the environmental uncertainties surrounding construction activities.

  3. As a vendor, I do supplies for NGOs, and the rate at which the Nigerian currency is falling against the dollar is so worrisome and makes the market unpredictable. Making it very hard for business owners too.

  4. As an aspiring project manager in the construction industry, I think one of the global issues that is of major concern is inflation. Particularly as a Nigerian, the instability of the naira against the dollar does bad things to project costs. I think the impact of inflation is never positive for the client and project manager.
Yes, we make plans for such fluctuations, but at times, it can get so crazy that a project gets stuck.

  5. As a customer service assistant professional here is how these Concerns resonate within my organization.
Technological Advancements: In the realm of customer service, technology has been a double-edged sword. On one hand, it has empowered us with innovative tools and platforms to enhance customer interactions. However, the rapid evolution of technology also means staying agile to adapt to new communication channels and tools. Keeping up with customer expectations in this dynamic technological landscape has been both exciting and challenging.
Competitive Landscape: The competitive landscape in our industry is more intense than ever. With globalization breaking down geographical barriers, we are not just competing with local businesses but navigating a global market. This necessitates a heightened focus on delivering exceptional customer service as a key differentiator to retain and attract customers in a fiercely competitive environment.
Social and Political Changes: The ever-shifting sands of social and political landscapes have a direct impact on customer sentiments. Navigating through diverse perspectives and addressing concerns arising from societal changes requires a nuanced approach. As a customer service professional, understanding and empathizing with customers from various backgrounds and perspectives has become integral to maintaining positive customer relations.
Environmental Concerns: Environmental issues have also made their mark on the customer service domain. Customers are increasingly conscious of the environmental footprint of businesses. This awareness has led to a surge in inquiries about sustainable practices, packaging, and corporate responsibility. Balancing the need for eco-friendly initiatives with operational efficiency is an ongoing challenge that demands strategic thinking.
In conclusion, the confluence of these global issues has made my role as a customer service assistant both dynamic and demanding. It has underscored the importance of not only meeting but exceeding customer expectations, all while adapting to the evolving landscape shaped by technology, competition, social dynamics, and environmental consciousness.

  6. The world keep revolving and at the same time everything changes especially in technology.
But as a project manager, you take the best out of every change and be a professional that you are.

    1. As an aspiring project manager, i think global issues like technology advancements, competition, social and political changes, and environmental crises can significantly impact organizations and projects.
Technological shifts may require adaptations to stay competitive, while political changes can influence regulatory movements. Social shifts may affect consumer preferences, and environmental crises can pose risks to operations. Organizations must navigate these dynamics to thrive and ensure projects align with the volving global landscape.

  7. As a start-up technology company that I work for, I found out that technology and competition greatly affects the industry and also trying to find a balance to this whiles trying to get a win- win situation out of it, is truly a struggle.

  8. In all the projects we do now, or that we may do, we use frameworks like SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis to understand these complexities and PESTLE (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental) analysis to anticipate external factors that could impact projects. Agile methodologies can offer the flexibility needed to navigate uncertainty, while waterfall methods provide structured planning that can be essential for specific regulatory requirements. The key is often to blend these approaches, using agile to iterate and adapt quickly and waterfall to ensure thorough planning and documentation where necessary.

  9. Complexity is indeed a serious factor to consider as a PM.Ability to think out of the box matched with timely well thought out decision will help the PM navigate through challenges.

  10. Political changes, competition, environmental , technology and social media has great impact on organisational projects, these impacts could be in the upside or downside whichever way the organisations uses these unpredictable event to effect growth, information and improve on existing stands.
